“For Want Of A Dentist: Pr. George's Boy Dies After Bacteria From Tooth Spread to Brain”

If you haven’t yet read this article in the Washington Post, read it now.

Done yet? OK.

Look, it’s a real simple question: Is health care a right or a privilege?

I believe it is a right. To deny poor people the benefits of medical science is some heartless shit that no theory of economics can justify.

Sure, you could be a dick and say something like “Well why doesn’t the mom get a better job?” or “Why doesn’t she sell her rims?” (because we all know that all black people have rims on their car).

But to say these things, and believe me, some have, is to overlook the fact it’s not the child’s fault his family is poor. Blame the parents all you want if it makes you feel better. Whatever. Just don't blame the kids.

Yes, I know conservatives are always worried about creeping socialism/communism, and tend to construe any type of public assistance as pure bolshevism, but if you were serious and well as intellectually honest, you’d argue against public roadways and the NFL too. (I would include public schools on this list but we all know conservatives are already trying to “drown them in the bathtub,” to paraphrase the odious Grover Nordquist.)

This article hit home for me, since I recently shelled out $1820.00 to get two teeth extracted. I only expect to get about 60% of that back. That was nearly 7 weeks ago, and of course, I am still haggling with the damn insurance companies- and I have a "good" job with "good" insuarnce coverage.

I mean, c’mon, we’re delivering dental care (and freedom!) to the people of Iraq, why not American citizens too?

When someone is going to get healthcare that they’re not paying for, it means that someone else is paying for it. How is it right to take money away from someone to treat someone elses medical condition? There are many people in this country who are struggling to get by and don’t have extra money that they can just give out because someone is injured.

So you’re going to pay about $700 to have a couple teeth removed? Well, bravo foxtrot delta! Who do you think should pay for it? Is it my fault you had problems with your teeth? I just don’t understand – I don’t give a flying fornication about your teeth, so why should I give you a dime for them. Receiving through charity is much better than taking through force. If you need money for your teeth, ask a family member or friend, don’t ask Uncle Sam. Remember, Uncle Sam is your uncle, not your father.

Also, please keep in mind that a large factor in the high prices of medical care are due to trial lawyers. Read up on how many doctors will have patients take unnecessary tests and refer them to specialists when maybe not necessary due to fear of lawsuits. Trial lawyers are a cancer on our society.

And btw, if someone shows up at an emergency room, they are going to get care. Just look at all the illegal aliens who are forcing hospitals to shut down because of that fact.

Why did you refer to blacks when you were talking about poor people? That came out of nowhere…but it’s rather telling.

If you;d read the article instead of simply ating like the trollish dickhead you are, you would know the folks in question were poor and black.

And since you appear to lack comprehension even in regards to things you HAVE read, I mentioned my oewn trip to the dentist simply as reference. I did not ask nor did I demand- nor do I expect- anyone else to pay for my visit. As I pointed out quite clearly, I paid for it myself.

As to the rest of your comments...keep 'em coming! At this rate, I don't even need to refute them or the point of view they represent. They take care of themselves.

P.S. How long have you been waiting to work "bravo foxtrot delta" into a conversation? Since Desert Storm?

Awww, is Nikkos gonna cry?

If you don’t expect anyone to pay for your visit, why do you expect other people to get their visits paid for?

Willy, how old are you and do your parents know you're on the internet when their not home???

I would never of dignified that comment w/ a response.

Willy, you display an all too common but nonetheless startling lack of understanding of both the contents of this post and the nature of insurance. I'll deal with the second part first.

When you pay your insurance premiums, you are paying into a collective that essentially is there to help you pay for bills in case you get hurt. The more people who pay into this collective, the more the collective can pay out when a member gets hurt. Essentially, you are betting that you will get hurt and that when that does happen, you will have people to help you out. Thus, every member of the collective pays for everyone's procedures.

Problems arise when the collective becomes a company that is interested in profit and share prices. The company wants to keep people paying in and pay out as little as possible. That is called profit. Thus, members of this former collective like Nikkos are forced to haggle and harangue to get the company to pay out the agreed amounts for a procedure like the one Nikkos had.

Which brings me to my first post. You conveniently avoid the central issue of Nikkos' post by bringing your straw people to this discussion. Nikkos is pointing out the blatant hypocrisy in the President's veto of the SCHIP while continuing to fund similar efforts in Iraq. Why is Bush against government sponsored health care for the poor and needy in America, but supportive of it in Iraq? I am not suggesting that Bush stop the health care extension efforts in Iraq, but I am insisting that he be consistent and extend those same facilities to his constituents.
